Indian government in favor of strict law to stop obscene content on social media, Union Minister said- 'This is not our culture'
New Delhi: The Indian government has stressed the need for strict laws to prevent pornographic content on social media platforms. Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said in the Lok Sabha, "There is a lot of difference between the culture of our country and the culture of the countries from where these social media platforms come. Therefore, I want the Standing Committee of Parliament to consider this issue and strict laws should be made for this."
The minister said this keeping in mind the cultural and moral values of India, where the need to stop inappropriate content on digital platforms is being felt. It is suggested that strict rules should be made so that these platforms work according to the cultural and legal framework of India. This will not only protect the values of the society but will also ensure discipline in the digital sector.
BJP MP Arun Govil, who gained fame by playing the role of Lord Ram in Ramanand Sagar's 'Ramayana' serial, supported Ashwini Vaishnav's demand. Govil said that there is a lot of content on social media that does not match our culture. There is a need to strictly monitor the kind of content that is coming on different platforms.

Ashwini Vaishnav said that this issue should be taken up by the Standing Committee of Parliament and by building consensus on it, more stringent laws should be made. During Question Hour in the Lok Sabha, he said, "Earlier there was editorial scrutiny and it was decided what is right and what is wrong, but now that process is over. Today social media has become a platform for freedom of expression, but it is uncontrolled and pornographic content is found on it."
The minister said that there is a need to make the current laws more stringent so that pornographic content can be stopped on social media platforms. He made this remark while answering the question of BJP MP Arun Govil. In the question, Govil had asked whether the existing mechanism is effective to prevent illegal broadcasting of pornographic and sexual content through social media platforms and whether the government is planning to make the laws more stringent to prevent misuse of these platforms.
