Social media is being used to influence the decisions of courts, former CJI Chandrachud spoke on trolling of judges
New Delhi: Former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Sunday said that social media is being used by special interest groups to influence the outcome of cases and judges need to be cautious about them. In NDTV's special program 'NDTV INDIA Samvaad-Samvidhan @75', the former CJI said that nowadays people want to form an opinion based on 20 seconds seen on YouTube or any other social media platform. This is a big threat to society.
Former CJI Chandrachud further said that in today's time there are many such groups who try to influence the cases and results of the courts with the help of social media. He said that every citizen of the country has the right to understand what is the basis of any decision given by the court. Every citizen of the country has the full right to have an opinion on the decision of the court. He said that many times people go too far while expressing their opinion. It is completely wrong to go beyond the decisions of the court and make judges personal targets.
The former CJI said that everyone tries to form their opinion based on what they see on YouTube or any social media platform. This is a serious threat to us. The courts take any decision after a difficult process. He said that no issue is big or small for the court. The court's only attempt is to assess the case on the basis of facts and law. After this, the court reaches a decision under a process.

The former CJI said about the impact of trolling on judges on social media that the judges have to be very careful about the fact that they are constantly being subjected to this attack of special interest groups, who are trying to change the decisions of events taking place in the courts.
Former CJI Chandrachud said that in a democracy, the power to decide the validity of laws has been entrusted to the constitutional courts. There is a provision in the separation of powers that the legislature will do the work of making laws, the executive will implement the law and the judiciary will interpret the law and decide the disputes. There are times when this becomes stressful. In a democracy, the task of policy making is entrusted to the government.
